Rye Airfield is coming to you on Saturday June 4th!!! Well not the whole Airfield but their awesome team riders and Ramp Camp instructors are along with their ramps and tons of gear. They will be ready to do some demos and get you on a skateboard. Rye Airfield's "Get on Board" program is the best way to checkout skateboarding. If you have thought about trying to learn but don't know where to start, or if you don't have your own equipment but want to give skateboarding a try, this is just the thing for you. Come as you are, they will bring everything else, or feel free to bring your own gear. You will learn everything you need to get started with skateboarding in a really fun environment. Highlights will include skateboard history and building a skateboard as well as essentials like standing, pushing, turning, stopping and of course a trick or two, plus tons of other cool things.

Our local cub scouts have organized efforts to help make the 2nd Annual South Berwick Eliot Rotary Kids' Day a huge success. They are going to be present to make sure two of our greatest needs are met. The cub scouts have created a trash detail schedule for the day and throughout the day to empty trash and keep our downtown looking its best. They have also volunteered to provide water during the day for everyone free of charge.

Our hats off to our cub scout troops and all the volunteers who have stepped up to make sure water and trash were covered for the day.

The majority of South Berwick Eliot Rotary Kids' Day will be taking place on the grounds of Central School, Main Street South Berwick Maine. This year activities have extended out to the left, right, and back sides of the property. We have also welcomed the First Parish Federated Church to join our day and they will be offering numerous activities and live music. Don't forget to "touch a truck" behind P. Gagnon & Son and grab some free cotton candy from the Strawberry Festival Committee. Main Street businesses saw the success of the day last year and have launched their own Kids' Day activities and goodies in front of some of their storefronts: Early Bird Cafe, Pricepoint Eyewear, and Nature's Way Market. The Sarah Orne Jewett House will once again be hosting their Teddy Bear Doll Clinic on their back lawn. We are excited to present South Berwick with this incredible day and hope that you make it a fun, safe, family tradition. Third Graders Travel Through Time to Raise Awareness of Counting House Museum

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine -- A group of third grade students at Central School has been working on a service-learning project with the Old Berwick Historical Society to build an awareness of the Counting House Museum as a family destination to learn about the history of the town. Katherine Bousquet’s class began working on this project earlier this spring.

“Service learning is unique,” said Bousquet. “Children enter an actual partnership with someone in the community to solve an existing problem. Thus, service! At the same time, the work the students do must be related to the curriculum and the goals for learning!”

Students met with historical society volunteers and learned that while the museum receives many visitors each year, the number of families with children was fewer than what the museum had hoped. The students worked together to come up with ideas and plans for how they might reach families in the community and spark an interest in visiting the Counting House.

“They’re so creative,” said historical society president Wendy Pirsig of the children’s ideas. “And the students have really dedicated themselves to this valuable project of getting the word out about the museum as a community resource.”

The decision to host a booth at South Berwick’s second annual Kids’ Day on June 5 in was made by the students in an effort to raise community awareness. After numerous trips to the Counting House, research online and in books, visits to other local historic sites such as the Hamilton House and the Sarah Orne Jewett House and the annual Hike Through History at Central School, the children used their knowledge to develop fun and educational activities for a booth at Kids’ Day.

There will be a range of activities from learning about and making a toy that a child in the 1800’s would have played with, to hand-sewing their own initial. Visitors can enjoy a skit of what it was like to be a mill worker in the 1800’s and learn a dance from the time period. There will even by an “I Spy at the Counting House” book where they find, identify and discover information about objects from the past.

In the words of Erica Bergendahl, “Being at the museum, I felt like I was back in history.”

In addition to the activities, there will be a brochure pertaining to the museum written for kids by kids.

“We want families to visit the museum,” said Jake Doyle, another pupil. “It is not like an ordinary museum, it is all about our town.”

Through this project, the students were able to become actively engaged in their town, as well as learn the value of community involvement.

“Many people donated their time and talents to making this project a success,” said Bousquet. “It was the volunteers from the Counting House, Kids’ Day, the parents of the students and the support of teachers at Central that have enabled the students to learn so much and to accomplish their goal.”

Fiona Scharff said, “This service learning project shows me that if we all work together we can do amazing things.”

The students hope that by seeing how fun and interesting history can be at their booth, kids and their families will take a trip to visit the museum this summer.

The Counting House Museum is open Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 to 4:00 pm from June through October. Admission is free.

- Wanted: volunteers to lay down a full scale plan of the new library in the Young Street parking lot, close to Central School. We have permission to put down some painted markers so we could recreate the duct tape/chalk drawing as needed over the summer.
Get some buddies lined up - 4 people could make quick work of this, I believe, and it would be fun!

Kids' Day is excited to welcome the Civic Air Patrol on June 5th. They will be kicking off the Everything Wheels Parade with their very own color guard. Next visit their Command Center located just outside Touch a Truck on to the left of Central School to get insight on how they help us keep safe. Take a walk out back and learn how to build your very own rocket and then watch it fly on the black top. We will have the parking lot free and cleared of cars so you will have lots of space to watch them fly high.

The Civil Air Patrol will be launching their very own rocket at 2:00pm - make sure to find a way to the back of Central School for this exciting event.

Also one last thing from the Air Patrol - they will be bringing their Fatal Vision Simulator Goggles to show you another way to keep people safe and educate them at the same time.

Last year was the first annual South Berwick Kids' Day, a small group of community members gathered around a simple idea of creating a day for kids and their family that didn't have to be about money. It was intended to create a day in which kids could gather, be active, be entertained, be healthy, be amused, and be generous to themselves and others all while knowing they were part of a community who cares. We had no idea what the level of interest would be from the kids or the business and organizations and held our breath as we waited for the first Everything Wheels Parade to reach Central School. We were told through numerous approximations that over 2000 showed up for the first event. We are just a month away and the anticipation for the second annual event in South Berwick has grown past any early expectation.

A special thank you and deep appreciation to the South Berwick Eliot Rotary for recognizing the level of positive impact Kids' Day had on the community last year and their belief in what it can achieve this year and well into the future. They have stepped forward to take our small little group under its wing of altruism and provide us with a safety net to assure the continuance on Kids' Day through the support of their members volunteering and their providing insurance for the day.

FREE rocket building from the Civil Air Patrol

Blain Cote is at it again. Not only was he instrumental in providing Kids' Day with the Command Center 1 from the EMA he is also heading up a giant effort from the Civil Air Patrol to offer kids of all ages an "out of this world" experience in building their own rockets and watching the Civil Air Patrol launch rockets that they have created. How fortunate are we to be a part of this community?

"We have a booth that we will be setting up with information on the Civil Air Patrol and a few tables that we will use to have kids build foam, rubber band propelled rockets made from recycled foam meat trays. I believe we will need an electrical outlet for hot glue guns for the foam rockets. As far as launching rockets, behind the school will be great so we can have room for them to land and we can secure an area to keep kids safe. We can have kids come up to launch them, but they will have to follow safety procedures and we can provide the proper PPE. We will set them up and kids press the button to launch them.

Another one of our missions is DDR (Drug Demand Reduction) which educates kids on the uses of drugs and alcohol and how to say no and stay away from them. We also have a set of goggles (like the ones the PD have) that shows them how alcohol impairs them and they have to complete simple tasks that they soon find out it is difficult to do.

We can do whatever you want us to do, DDR, aerospace education, emergency services and the Cadet Program which are our missions chartered by Congress and the US Air Force.
We too, look forward to participate in our first Kids Day and make it a yearly activity for the Seacoast Composite Squadron – CAP.

Keeping Kids Safe is Priority #1 - The Command Center has landed

As we approach our 2nd annual Kids' Day in South Berwick we are fortunate that it continues to grow. Organizations and businesses are stepping up to make sure that we have something for kids of every age. Blain Cote, Capt., CAP Commander of the Seacoast Composite Squadron has stepped forward in two major ways. The first is too help keep our kids safe during the day of the event. We will be positioning an EMA Command Center on Central School grounds near P. Gagnon & Son. This will create a location for kids who become separated from their parents. It is also a great tour for kids and family to discover how technology has advanced in the emergency response field.

"Command-1 is a large command post and has many features that will provide your staff and my EMA staff along with the PD and FD to have as a center of operations. It has a large telescoping camera that we can scan the area, 2 dispatch consoles with 6 different banded radios with cross band repeating capabilities, satellite TV, internet and telephone as well as a conference room. This will provide a safe haven for lost children and allow all radio communications to go through one location. Do you have portable radios for communications? If not, there are plenty on Command-1 and we can set them up for you and your staff. I will have Command-1 staffed and at the location you referenced; we can also let the children go in and tour as well. "

The First Parish Federated Church will be one of the new welcomed addition sites to Kids' Day to expand our grounds and be able to offer kids of all ages even more FREE activities, entertainment and goodies. Their shaded grounds and ample space within will provide a wonderful spot for families to create even more memories at this years Kids' Day in South Berwick, Maine.

There will be three rooms at FPFC with a different activity in each to offer families.
Room 1 – The “Pocket Lady”, where children can tell a joke, a riddle, or sing a song for a special prize from one of the pockets in her apron.
Room 2 – Bubble activities and free bubbles to all who participate
Room 3 – “Loving Hands and Hearts”, children craft a project with their own hands and receive a heart eraser and their created craft

Word just in from Pumpkinman Triathlon Race Director, Kat Donatello, "The Pumpkin Kids Fun Run courses were designed today. For children 5 and under the course will be 1/10 of a mile (half a loop and a run down the shute), for children 6-8 the course will be 1/3 of a mile (one loop and a run down the shute) and for 9-11 the course will be 1/2 mile (two loops and a run down the shute)!! ..."

Thanks to Bob's Sporting Goods & Trophies, P Gagnon & Son, & The Pumpkinman Triathlon participants in the FREE Kids' Fun Run will be receiving a free t'shirt, sports bottle, race bib, and a race medalion.

ChildLight Yoga returns for a second year, offering a playful yoga class for the whole family. Kids of all ages stretched, breathed and giggled through Lisa Flynn's class last year (see photo) and they are excited to come back for more. This year, all class participants will receive a special gift.

ChildLight Yoga also offers classes, summer camps and other programs for kids of all ages around the seacoast, so it is a great chance to meet with her, gather information information, and ask some questions!

Clubhouse Kids is coming back to Kids'Day with delicious FREE cookie decorating!

Clubhouse Kids is a before and after school program located right in the cafeteria at Central School! We welcome kids ages 5- 11 years old. We are open from 6:30 to 8:30am and from 3:00-6:00pm. Drop-in hours as well as contracted hours are available. We also operate on Early Release Days. Summer Camp information will be out soon! Who can forget last year at Kids' Day when the smell of grilled burgers and dogs made its way down to the Central School lawn? SBRELL, South Berwick Rollinsford Eliot Little League volunteers headed up by Joyce Lebel cooked up a feast that is not quickly forgotten. It was the perfect addition to the day and they even figured out a way to offer Sundaes. The prices were amazing and all proceeds went to all the young ball players in our community.

SBRELL was the first of our last years participants to register for 2010 and we couldn't be happier. So whether you decide to pack a picnic or grab a burger by SBRLL you are sure to not walk away hungry for the day.

Service Learning Project

Counting House Museum

This fall, a group of teachers in our district attended a workshop to learn about service learning in the classroom. Service learning is unique in that the children enter an actual partnership with someone in the community to solve an existing problem. Thus, service! At the same time, the work the students do must be related to the curriculum and the goals for learning for the grade level. Thus, learning!

The Old Berwick Historical Society (OBHS) contacted our classroom to assist with the problem of under usage of the Counting House Museum by families in the community. Our task will be to facilitate awareness of this amazing resource. At the same time, the students will gain a better understanding of our town’s history and increase their knowledge of the changes that have occurred as the town has grown to what it is today (3^rd grade curriculum).

Thus far, we have had a visitor from the society visit our class, introducing the problem and what they hope to achieve (more families visiting the museum). The children decided that they needed some background information about the museum in order to choose a plan. They worked in groups to brainstorm questions relevant to our goal.

On Wednesday, we will be traveling to the Counting House Museum. The children will tour the museum and interview a museum spokesperson, asking the important questions they have.

Upon our return, the children will use the knowledge they’ve gained from our visit to think about possible ideas we might pursue. They will compare and contrast these ideas to determine which will best meet the goal of informing the public of the museum, resulting in more visitors. Next, they’ll work together to carry out their plan. Evaluating and analyzing their work will be ongoing. Higher-level thinking skills and problem solving strategies will be inherent in this project and will be in a meaningful context, as this is a real-life problem we’re working on! The excitement level in our classroom is high as we get ready to work!!!

Last year, Kids Day started the tradition of having a community contribution table. Kids came to the table and created beautiful stepping stones which when dried were place in the front and side gardens of Central School. Kids had a lot of fun and we quickly ran out of quickcrete.

This year, Joyce Lebel stepped forward with a brilliant idea of how local kids can be a part of a much bigger community contribution table at Kids' Day 2010. Make sure you stop by the Community Contribution at Kids' Day, 2010 in South Berwick on June 5th. Kids will be tracing their hands on cotton/muslin and then decorating their hands to fit their personalities. Then they will write their first name, age, and town. A group of volunteers is going to assemble the squares and create child size quilts to send off to other children around the globe in need.

We have tons of bright beautiful youthful fabric but we are looking for cotton/muslin and stitchers and cutters to help assemble the quilts after kids day. Let us know if you are interested in being a part of this community contribution table at Kids' Day 2010.

So in a previous post I mentioned our wish list containing Bread N Butter like Puppets for the Kids' Day 2010 Parade. Well what I meant to say was similar to the Bread N Puppet group. I did a quick google search and found inspiration for homemade giant puppets for parades. Our wish is that some of the incredibly talented people for South Berwick will be inspired to create their very own puppets for our Everything Wheels Parade. Kids Day 2010 seeking volunteers, sponsors and public input

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine — Planning for the second annual South Berwick Kids Day is under way, and organizers are seeking public input and involvement from participating families, businesses and groups. This year, the South Berwick-Eliot Rotary is collaborating with Kids Day organizers, and with their support, the June 5 festival promises to be better in its second year.

Mark Gagnon, member of Rotary and longtime South Berwick resident and business owner, said Rotary and Kids Day are a perfect match, since one of the Rotary's missions is to support the local community.

"Last year was such a great day. The parade reminded me of when I was a kid," Gagnon said. "It was great to see all the little kids and their decorated trikes, bikes, scooters and various vehicles."

Jennifer Houghton, founder and coordinator of Kids Day 2009, is also a Rotary member. She is grateful for the Rotary's involvement.

"Rotary provides a strong partnership while offering insurance coverage for the event. Its active members have already begun coordinating various Kids Day tasks to ensure its success," said Houghton.

Last year's favorites will be back, with double the number of free bike helmets to be distributed by Seacoast Kiwanis and free cotton candy from The Strawberry Festival Committee. Other organizations participating again this year include York Hospital, South Berwick Public Library and Childlight Yoga.

Vicki Stewart, Central School Principal and last year's Kids Day Parade Grand Marshall, was proud to be part of the first family-friendly event. "It was exciting to see the community taking part and coming together," Stewart. said "It was perfect."

South Berwick Kids Day will kick off at 11 a.m. with the Everything Wheels Parade. Decorate your wheelbarrows, strollers, skateboards, or anything else with wheels and join in the fun at South Berwick's Community Center. The parade will travel up Norton Street to Main Street and will end at Central School. Games, activities and giveaways will be set up throughout the downtown area.

The Sarah Orne Jewett House was the location of a Doll Clinic during Kids' Day 2009. Kids brought their rag dolls, teddy bears, and favorite stuffed animals for minor repairs and surgery. They waited patiently while stitchers made repairs and brought loved ones back to life. The Doll Clinic was a great part of South Berwick Kids' Day.

Free Bikes Helmets - Number Given to Double for 2010

One of the most exciting parts of Kids' Day 2009 was to watch the hundreds of children being properly fitted with bike helmets that were provided for by the Seacoast Kiwanis Club. People waited patiently to make sure they were able to receive one of the free 200 or so helmets, the line formed early in the morning. It was amazing to watch!! The Seacoast Kiwanis club has already committed to being a part of Kids' Day 2010 and have asked if they could bring even more helmets to be fitted and given away to kids. We had such an overwhelming response that this year we have decided to have two locations for bike helmets. One in the front of Central School and the other behind where we will have older kids' activities showcased. More info to come soon.

Our community is very thankful for the outpouring of support we have received from local organizations and businesses in helping to make South Berwick Kids' Day all about the kids and their experiences. We look forward to seeing you there on June 5th, 2010.

York Hospital Deserves A-round-of-a-APPLAUSE!

York Hospital in South Berwick was the very first business to step forward and say that they would like to be a part of South Berwick Kids' Day 2009. They graciously donated funds and made it possible to hand out hundreds of FREE bright orange sport's bottles to kids. Linda and her friends were on the front lawn of Central School greeting kids and their families and passing out the colorful bottles and water. Since Kids' Day 2009, I've spotted many bottles at T-Ball, Soccer Games, the toddler playground, and just about anywhere my kids go in South Berwick. Thank You York Hospital for your generosity and commitment to our community.

"I've never been to an event so inspiring. I literally had tears running down my face watching the all wheels parade of all ages come triking, biking, wheelbarrow, scooter and strollering down Main St. that morning. Later on, over 20 families filled the tent for family yoga and we had a playful class. One family had children ages 2, 9 and 11, doing yoga side by side (though admittedly, the 2 yr. old took a break to go back to her pink cotton candy). The giggles and excitement of the day still tickle my heart. Can't wait for the 2010 event!"

The Everything Wheels Parade kicked off the first South Berwick Kids' Day. Kids of all ages came out in full force decorating scooters, trikes, wagons, bikes, motorized cars, golf carts, and by foot. Guest appearances by Smokey the Bear, our Town Manager, Badger the Maine State Library Mascot, and the Majestic Eagle.
